Ear prominence check
Measure the gap between the side of your head and the outer rim of your ear, enter it below, and see where you sit on the prominence scale - plus what realistically works at that level. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
How to measure
- Face a mirror straight on, head level, hair tucked away.
- Hold a ruler flat against the side of your head, pointing outward.
- Read the horizontal distance to the outer rim of the ear at its widest point.
- Repeat on the other side - one ear usually sticks out more.
Enter at least one measurement to see your result.
The prominence bands
| Distance | Band | What usually works |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 mm | Typical | Nothing needed |
| 15-20 mm | Borderline | Hair volume, or adhesive for events |
| 20-30 mm | Prominent | Adhesive daily, or otoplasty for permanence |
| Over 30 mm | Very prominent | Adhesive reduces it; only surgery flattens it |
Bands follow the measurement conventions commonly used in otoplasty literature. This is a cosmetic self-check, not a diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
How do you measure ear prominence at home?
Stand in front of a mirror, look straight ahead, and measure the horizontal distance from the skin of the skull to the outer rim (helix) of the ear at its widest point. Do it on both sides - asymmetry is normal and very common.
What counts as prominent ears?
Clinically, an ear that sits more than about 20 mm (0.8 in) from the side of the head, or at an auriculocephalic angle above roughly 35 degrees, is described as prominent. Between 15 and 20 mm is borderline and usually only visible from the front.
Is this a medical diagnosis?
No. This is a cosmetic self-check based on published measurement conventions. It cannot diagnose anything, and prominent ears are a normal anatomical variation rather than a medical condition.
Can measurement change what I should do about it?
It sets expectations. Under 20 mm, non-surgical adhesive correction usually brings the ear visually flush. Above about 30 mm, adhesive still reduces prominence noticeably but will not make the ear sit flat, and surgery is the only option that can.
